Carver Open Mike
A few people in the class said this story was not as exciting as the previous stories we've read. Maybe the shorter version would have been better? The problem is that the shorter version is even darker, more pessimistic, than the longer original version that we are reading. And maybe a warm sunny afternoon is not the best time to study a difficult story in a foreign language, is it?
Anyway, any thoughts about this story?

I've just finished reading this story, and I didn't get it. I hope dear professor would explain the last comment of Nick. And who are the McGinnises anyway?
ReplyDeleteOh, also it was quite shocking for me that in America editors have that much power even they can cut and rearrange the original stories. Do they still do the same things? Personally I prefer to have the original stories even if they are longer or less interesting. Simply because it is the ORIGINAL!
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry, Jerry. This novel is NOT boring stuff:)..Finally I found lots of ineresting shocks. Crazy moderners, indirect words... Your choice was good. And yes, it's difficult story even in after lunch time, but I'm sure, discovery of seeing ordinary people's abnormal LOVE is kind of kick the brain.

It's just CRAZY story of INSANE couple! <- I wanted to say like this when I read first time...
ReplyDeleteLove...ah...I've never fell in love so hard to say...
I think the reason why people love each other is...because there is no other way...and definitely not the reason that expectation of taking something from lover.
I mean, if we really love someome, we need to cover up and understand our partner's some fault or...kind of filthy past. Abmormal love(same as Jinyoung said, and I know it is hard to cover up), for example.
The Thing that make us fall in love is the emotion, but the thing that complete love is understanding.
p.s. But...love is too hard and crazy thing to understand, it's true...
This story makes me think about love and relationship among people. I think love is hard to define. Becuase there are a lot of kind of love like sexual love, sentimental love or the day-to-day caring about the other.
ReplyDeleteBut all the things just can be memory. This can be terrible thing but good thing. I feel really sympathy this part of the story. Because of two sides of love.
A certain fact is that I still don't know well about love.

ReplyDeleteWell, You said about boring, but in my opinion, it's like kind of cultural difference. About the ending of the story, you said it's very American way of view, and I agree with that. Maybe some people have difficulty in feeling it as the way you felt, and to tell the truth, I found myself difficulty with it too ; -;
