After today's class, when I compared with 'there will be fine' again, suddenly a famous economist, Warren Edward Buffett's words came out in my mind.
I can't sure detail, but he said that the only thing that we learned from history is people never learn anything from history.
Anyway, in the novel, we can't know what "Art Edwards" felt. When people came into his house and said their "hope", Maybe he paid attention what they saying. And maybe he had a hope. Of course the primary reason was his own desire to enjoy and make a big fortune in the Wembley, but this pitiful creature could justified his reason with other people's thinking. Professor said nobody told "We should go Wembley", but to Art, it could be kind of compelling.
In class, professor said Art's death couldn't change people's behavior. And also after Jesus died, people still do bad things forgetting what Jesus did for them. But in some sense, there sacrifice doesn't mean nothing. After Jesus died some people have changed. We could see this through people who goes to church. They know what he did for them. In Art's case, I can't sure some of them chaged their mind a little and know what Art did for them. But when they said Art is their hero, it had some sense not only they want to get together against other street but also they felt something from Art. They might feel Art did great things for them but they coundn't express it because they are not that smart people.
Okay, they might felt some sense that other people can't express...but...ah...
First of all, I'll give you apology if my words were kind of rude to you. Of course they impressed from Art, but I think it's not enough to change something essential. They will feel for a moment, but they will do all the same.
In the last line, for example, they had a great funeral and during the ceremony for their scapegoat, another person, Lupinski(I can't sure it is correct spell, sorry...) gathering money from them. It's a hint that nothing's gonna change.
In my opinion, there is not enough to have emotion, they had to learn something. That is only way to make people change.
If I didn't understand what you mean or missed some point, please text me.
Throughout the scapegoat, I felt that people in this story are too stupid. Lots of questions about their stupid behaves came into my head. Why is it so important for them to raise more money than the other group of people? (As you know, there are two groups of people, one is the people in Earl street, and the other is the people in Terence street.) If they raise more money for the Jubilee, do they get anything good for them? Why can’t they think of collecting money for themselves? Why can’t they think of depositing their raised money to the bank? Why do Mr. Law and Mrs. Law behave silly? Are they really trying to donate their money just for spiting each other? Why don’t they know how to manage money? All these questions have something to do with their education I think. I don’t know why but what I can guess is they are poor so that they didn’t have enough chance to be learned. They aren’t well educated and don’t know how to use money. What does it mean? It means they aren’t suitable for the world which money runs. Take a look at Art. People chose him as a person who keeps their raised money because they are scared of money. Here’s a question. Do you think that Art who seemed a best person for raised money know how to use money? Or let me change my question. Isn’t he the person who lives in Terence street? He is the same people like others in Terence street, which means he also doesn’t know how to use money. This poor person, Art, commits a suicide in the end after loosing all money they raised. He is a victim of their ignorance. So, what’s the lesson of this story? I think there are two lessons. One is money and the other is education. Think about money. It has both sides, good and bad. Money is convenient medium of exchange, which helps our life benefit. On the other hand, money is the root of evil. Whatever it is, the thing is we can’t live without money in 21th century. See the people in the story. Their ignorance about money results in Art’s death. In addition, education also can be a good lesson here. Their ignorance about money actually comes from their poor education. Their silly behaviors are also from the fact that they aren’t well educated. See what was happening after Art died. After Art died, these stupid people felt better from the sin which is caused by money although nothing has changed. Like superstition, by sacrificing someone, they think their guilty is forgiven. All people who live in 21 century know that nothing can be changed from that kind of sacrifice.
As Jerry told us today, this story is like a copy of our own life. we, all the people, care about rank of something, who's got more money or who's no.1?
But when I finished this story I thought it's not about money. Money is not the matter to them because they never had that much money, then how they know about real money? Investment, those poor street people may know this word but don't know meaning or how to do invest.
And I agree with Sang-A. Prof.Jerry told us, after Jesus's death people still doing bad thing BUT! It's totally UNTRUE. If Jesus didn't come and didn't die for us, situation would be worse than now. I wonder how Art can be compared with Jesus Christ?
Art is poor man, he was fine but too FINE, there was no up and down, exciting, even sad or happy. Well.. Maybe sad is better than NO felling. With this point I guess I am lucky than Art.

and I recommand you guys to see the movie "City of god" which is similar situation with "The scape goat". :)
After the midterm we started to read some stories about money and these stories reminded me so many things. what money can do to people,, what money can become,, I felt that money is not just a money in these stories. Writer are talking about further more facts about money. I thought writers are trying to talk about the power and Influence of money through out these stories, especially in the story 'scapegoat' I learned once again that money can become a dreadful weapon to destroy people's mind and life. 1$ means nothing but 1 million dollar can brainwash people. This is the ugly truth and I think everyone knows about this obvious truth but we often forget and flip the situation by their side. As soon as we forget the truth of the money no doubt money will take control of our life..and mind..The most important thing is we never realize until we lose everything and we lose our control. I think this is the power of the money. It gives you hopes and dreams.. but at the same time..it could take your hopes and dreams away...I'm so glad that I read these stories because I will never forget Art Edward and his death... and people in two streets. huge impact on my mind.
In the last class, Jerry compared this unimportant competition between two neighbors to the Korean's competition against the world. It was really interesting. Really, it happens everywhere. We all (not all, maybe) have had some experiences like.. being stressed because my friend was better than me, or even my sister is more beloved by parents or by others. I didn't catch this before Jerry told us. It really happens everywhere! I wish I had this kind of view to see the deep inside of stories, not just the surface of the stories.
Byeongho said, I learned that it is always good to think about 'irony' when we talk about a story. The 'irony' I found in this story is that some people in the street said anyone could do as Art did but actually no one in the town could do the same as Art. The evidence for my argument that no one would do the same is that everyone respected Art after his death. Maybe they knew that they couldn't do such a brave(in a stupid way) and risky thing because they were so poor and didn't know anything to do with that much money, and that made them admire Art after his death. What a gloomy circumstance!
This is nice work that shows human history at once. There is an old saying: history repeats itself. the story is just like the saying. nothing will be changed in this village, and same thing with human nature. Some might argue that people could learn from mistakes, but they are forgetting that they also could forgot about the mistake and will repeat same thing over and over again until heavens knows when.......
but I liked this story very much for giving me such a nice black-comedied, ironical ending.:D

Well, I don't think only the people who know the meaning of investment or how to invest are think money matters.
ReplyDeleteIn fact, after I read it, I had to admit it is the best ending I have seen.
And I thought that too...the cinema 'City of God'
The similarities of Rio and Terence street are nothing's changing and 'money talk'.
(If Jesus didn't come and didn't die for us, situation would be worse than now? Well...I don't know how this world can be worse than now...)
