I heard that there is an irony. If Jack won the game, then he lose the money and if he lose the game, he could get the money. And I think it just looks like our own life. It is is not just irony but kind of oppertunity cost. We want to get something, then we have to pay it. And nothing is achieved by accident. I thought that Jack is really fool. He shoild have to keep "Rome was not built in a day." in mind.
I thought a different thing. When the world war 2, there was a football match between Nazi germany and Poland. Before the match, a Nazis officer came into the Polish locker room and threatened Polish players. If the Poland win, there would be some prize. But the case of opposite, they, the Poland players would be excuted by firing squad on the middle of the stadium. What a stifling irony situation! If they win the game, they defeat! DIE! At that time, Poland was one of the best football playing country. And that was the only hope that can win the Germany, their conqueror. Germany was...not quite well. After the first half of a game, the score was 2-0. Poland was losing. But finally, they chose the honour of their nation. When after the match, Poland won 3-2, and all players died in front of Polish supporters. Now I heard that their monumental statue is standing on the central square of Warszawa. Of course the characters in this story are totally different with them. But the point is, they, no, we, all of us often have to make a irony choice like those. The choice between victory or life, or between victory or money. In those situations, we can make a right, or wrong choice. The result of that would be different on the point of view. That was the reason why I can't only laughing when I read the story.
I pited people for their loss of money and their neighbor. although they didn't adapt their lesson from this incident, hopefully they will not repeat the mistake one day...
It's weird that I didn't recognize that this is a Hemingway story.lol This story was also kind of sad and gloomy for me. Even though it's good for Jack to lose the game and get the money but the fact that he decides to do like that is not good for me and maybe for Jack too in the deepest side of him.
