One Last Puzzle from "Sense of Humour"

At the very end of the story, as Humphrey and Muriel are driving the hearse with the dead body of Colin in the back, Humphrey thinks, or says: "I was proud of her, I was proud of Colin, and I was proud of myself." What in the world does this mean?

  1. I think he isn't that sad about Colin's death.
I guess he is proud of himself because he got Muriel. He might feel sad about Colin's death, but he is also proud of him who showed all the passion of love to Muriel. And he might thankful for Colin give two days like marriage. Anyway this is pretty selfish mind infront of one man's death.
And he is proud of her perhaps because she is realistic. That's one of the reason why she choose Humprey not Colin.

  2. I think Humphrey was proud of people who truely loved someone.
Colin's actiong was little strange but his love for Murial was earnest. and Murial might loved Colin too, and at the same time maybe she loved Humphrey, too.
and in front of Colin's death body, Humphrey awake meaning of love over one's personal mind. so he can be proud of colin who interrupted his date.

  3. Humm...
I think all three words contains different meanings.

First, 'I was proud of her' means Humphrey loves Muriel. You know, if you love someone, you feel proud of your lover.

Second, 'I was proud of Colin' means Humphrey think Colin's passionate love is kind of respectful. And that's why Humphrey said he was proud of Colin.

And third, 'I was proud of myself' means he finally gets Muriel. I heard that men have pride himself. Catching his own girl is such a proud situation to boys, I think.

  4. I can understand Humphrey's mind. If that were my case, I couldn't stand the colin's acting. But somehow Humphrey felt not that bad, because what colin doing meant Murielis very attractive.

So I was proud of her, because she is so beautiful that makes one people die.

And He proud of Colin because of his endless love. He is dead but his collapse is still with Muriel anyway, and Humphrey understand that.

The last one, He proud of himself because he gets her. She is Humphrey's lover.

  5. I still think that Colin didn't do anything good for himself. if he did not follwed the couple everywhere, they would not be more closed together, but Coline created the worst case for himself!
moreover, about Muriel, I think what she really needs was a comfort rather than 'humour', which the protagonist have and Colin does not.

  6. He was proud of her because she got through the sadness by her sense of humor and he was proud of Colin since Colin loved muriel even risking his one life. That love maybe impressed Humphrey. But He was more proud of himself since he survived in that love survival game and got a prize by the name of Muriel.
